What is a mulled wine spice kit for?
Mulled wine, also known as spiced wine, is an alcoholic drink usually made with red wine, along with various mulling spices and sometimes raisins, served hot or warm. It is a traditional drink during winter, especially around Christmas. It is usually served at Christmas markets in Europe, primarily in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and eastern France. There are non-alcoholic versions of it. Each set/packet contains: 4 individual bags filled with mulled wine spices. Listing is for 1 packet.
Ideas for use.
Add 2 sachets to approximately 750ml of wine or cider, 200ml of water and 2/4tbs of brown sugar to taste. Bring to just below the boil and simmer gently for 10 minutes, remove sachet and serve warm. If you would like a warming non -alcoholic spicy drink, you can use apple juice or cranberry juice. If you would like to add some zing to red cabbage, place one bag in the simmering red cabbage and orange juice, remove before serving. Leftover Mulled Wine can be used to glaze ham, poached pears, a hot toddy: simply add some mulled wine leftovers with a splash of whisky, squeeze of lemon and a spoon of honey to chase away the winter chills.
Where did Mulled Wine Spice Mix come from?
The Ancient Greeks weren’t really the type of people to leave extra wine on the table, but there was always a part of the harvest that didn’t make it. In order to prevent waste (and to make sure as much alcohol as possible was palatable), the Greeks would dump spices into the wine and heat it up. Always the Greek copycat, the Romans heated their extra wine with spices to save any from being wasted. But the Romans added a twist and called their wine “Conditum Paradoxum,” and a version of this recipe is still sold today.
